Kansas City has enough variety to fill several days without forcing you into a rigid sightseeing schedule. History, art, music, food and sports all provide good reasons to explore beyond downtown.
Start with the classics
The National WWI Museum and Memorial is one of the city’s major cultural attractions, while the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is another natural choice for visitors interested in museums. Kansas City’s many fountains add character throughout the city.
Explore the city’s music history
The historic 18th & Vine area is central to Kansas City’s jazz story and African American cultural history. It deserves time rather than being treated as a quick photo stop.
Markets and neighborhoods
River Market is good for wandering, eating and seeing a more everyday side of the city. Country Club Plaza offers a very different atmosphere, while areas such as Crossroads Arts District provide another reason to explore on foot.
Sports and family attractions
Kansas City has passionate professional sports fans, and attending a game can become a highlight if your visit matches the season. Families also have plenty of options, including the zoo and other attractions around the metro area.
Leave room for barbecue
I would not schedule every hour. In Kansas City, lunch can easily become an attraction of its own. Build your day around one or two major sights, explore the surrounding neighborhood and make sure there is enough time left to eat properly.
