Eat and Drink in Kansas City

You could build an entire Kansas City trip around eating. Barbecue is the obvious starting point, but it should be the beginning of your food exploration rather than the end.

Kansas City barbecue

Kansas City barbecue is associated with a broad range of smoked meats and a rich barbecue tradition. Ribs, brisket, pulled pork and sausage all appear, but burnt ends are particularly connected with the city.

Do not spend too much time trying to identify one universally “best” barbecue restaurant. Locals have strong opinions, which is part of the fun. Try more than one.

Beyond barbecue

The city’s food scene includes everything from casual neighborhood restaurants to contemporary dining. Different districts offer their own mix, so eating can be a good excuse to explore somewhere you might otherwise miss.

Beer and drinks

Kansas City also has a strong beer culture, including local breweries and taprooms. Cocktail bars, coffee shops and relaxed neighborhood drinking spots provide plenty of alternatives.

Come hungry

Portions can be generous, particularly when barbecue is involved. Sharing sides or meals occasionally is not a bad strategy if you want to sample more places.

My main advice is to avoid eating every meal near the biggest tourist attraction. Follow the food into different neighborhoods. In Kansas City, what is on the plate often becomes one of the best ways to understand the city.
