The National WWI Museum and Memorial is one of the Kansas City attractions I would put near the top of a first-time visitor’s list. Even if military history is not normally your subject, the museum provides a broad and human introduction to a conflict that reshaped the world.
More than uniforms and weapons
The exhibitions place objects, photographs and personal stories into a larger historical narrative. Give yourself enough time to read and absorb rather than treating the museum as a quick stop.
Liberty Memorial
The landmark tower above the museum is one of the city’s defining sights. When access and conditions allow, the elevated viewpoint adds an excellent city panorama to the historical visit.
Allow several hours
This is not a museum I would squeeze between lunch and another attraction. If the subject interests you, half a day can disappear surprisingly quickly.
Check current opening information and ticket arrangements before visiting.
Combine it with Union Station
The museum’s location makes it easy to combine with nearby Union Station and other central Kansas City sights.
For me, this is a good example of Kansas City exceeding expectations. Visitors may arrive thinking primarily about barbecue and jazz, then discover a museum of international significance sitting almost in the middle of their itinerary.
